Ashfall Legion

Ashfall Legion drops you into a burnt-out kingdom where you rebuild a band of heroes one recruit at a time. The story is grim but well written, and the character screens are stuffed with the kind of stats RPG fans love to fiddle with.

Combat is turn-based and slower than most mobile games dare to be, which we appreciated. You position your fighters, watch for enemy patterns, and there's real punishment for careless play. The touch controls handle it fine, with big tappable icons and a queue you can rearrange before locking in a turn.

It's a battery-hungry game, so plan for that. On long sessions our phone dropped charge noticeably, and the fans-would-help-if-phones-had-fans kind of warmth crept in. Worth it for the depth, but keep a charger nearby.
